Andreea Zabulic is a graphic designer based in Romania. She has a background in book illustration and a strong focus on branding design. Her work blends illustration, graphic design, and lettering.
Passionate about working with brands that have a clear mission and purpose, she brings a thoughtful, bespoke touch to every project. With a 'learning by doing' mindset, she is dedicated to crafting designs that not only tell compelling stories but also resonate with audiences on an emotional level.
What initially inspired you to start lettering, and how did you discover your passion for it?
When it comes to my art, I believe in trusting my intuition. I think the moment I decided to dive deeper into lettering was when I realised that it sparks my flow state, and it’s a wonderful blend of graphic design and illustration. It was then that I realised I was having FUN again, working on shaping letters and messages, trying to figure out compositions and how everything fits together like a puzzle.
Childlike curiosity and the satisfaction of problem-solving have always been key aspects that draw me to graphic design. Lately, I’ve been looking again for THE spark—the reason that makes me get up every day and love the work I do. And it seems lettering fits in that space quite nicely.
Who are some of your biggest influences in the lettering community, and how have they shaped your work?
One of my biggest influences in the lettering community is Martina Flor, and I believe her most profound impact on me is on my mindset.
Unexpectedly, pivoting from an in-house designer to a freelance one left me vulnerable and filled with self-doubt. However, discovering Martina’s work with designers worldwide, along with her life and work philosophy, has given me some priceless gifts: hope that there is a place for my art in the world and confidence that I can make a living through the work I love doing.
Her can-do attitude, enthusiasm, and optimism are truly inspiring. It’s because of her that I found a bit more courage to step into lettering and discover my vision and identity as a designer and artist.
What are some essential techniques or skills that you believe every lettering artist should master?
Having tried my hand at book illustration and graphic design, and now moving into lettering, I believe there are a few skills and techniques that all these fields have in common. Composition and colour theory are the first that come to mind, as they are the ones you’ll use most often.
I consider sketching another essential technique. I start all my projects on paper with a pencil, and I find it’s the best tool to translate inspiration and imagination into tangible projects.
Beyond technical skills, I also advise discovering a process that works for you and is efficient for both client and personal work. Stay disciplined and organised—these attributes will complement your vision and creativity as an artist and make you a professional people want to work with.
And last but not least, stay curious!

How did you transition from lettering as a hobby to making it a sustainable business?
At first, I considered lettering more of a side quest, but after discovering courses and books on this niche, things started to click slowly, and it became a main quest path.
I began connecting my work as an illustrator, graphic designer, and now a lettering artist, asking myself how this skill could enhance my services and expand my skillset. I realised that lettering has many applications in graphic design, adding another layer of depth to my work, an aspect that distinguishes me from other designers, at least in my country.
The transition happened when I decided to take it seriously and put in the real work.
I focused on building a portfolio with lettering pieces that had real applications, stories, and purpose. I promoted my work on social media, engaged with people passionate about lettering, and embraced the identity of a lettering artist, referring to myself as such and talking about my work with friends and people in my network. And then, something interesting started to happen—people began associating me with lettering.
It’s an ongoing process, but it’s fascinating!
Can you share a success story or milestone in your career that you're particularly proud of?
I don’t always believe in signs from the universe, but I think this one might be shouting loud and clear. I started this year on a rough note—pivoting from an in-house designer to a freelance one, living off my savings while building a new portfolio and online presence, but I am determined to specialise in lettering and put in the work despite the struggles.
Earlier in the year, I discovered Martina Flor’s work and deeply wished to take part in The Lettering Seminar, a yearly program she holds, specially designed for lettering artists. I knew it was an invaluable resource for building a strong foundation as a professional. When I saw they were offering a chance to win a scholarship, I knew I had to take the chance. So, with an open heart and almost not daring to hope, I sent in my application.
Then, the most surprising thing happened: one afternoon, I received a long-awaited email congratulating me on being one of the three winners of the scholarship for The Lettering Seminar! I am humbled and overjoyed, and in the back of my mind, I can’t help but feel this is another sign that I’m on the right path.
I couldn’t be more grateful. The work is just beginning!
Dream Project or Collaboration
I would love to continue exploring lettering in its many forms, and I dream of travelling for my work, drawing inspiration from new places and people. It would be a major accomplishment for me to have my art reach international audiences and resonate with people on an emotional level. Right now, I’m excited to dive deeper into murals, book cover design and illustration, branding, and apparel design, to name a few!
I feel energised when I work with people who have a well-defined cause, mission, and goal for their brand or project, and who show enthusiasm and passion for it! I also find that I do my best work on projects related to themes I’m genuinely passionate about. My interests include (but aren’t limited to) mental health and wellness, both fiction and non-fiction books, fantasy video games and tabletop games, cooking, and all things geeky.
