First look at the Book 8 Logo

Jan 15, 2022

Every year, we tap someone on the shoulder to come up with a design for the Typism book logo and launch it at the end of the year, ready to send out the call for entries into the next Typism Book. Well, this edition didn't quite go as planned.

Terence Tang, better known as Tinlun Studio was working away diligently on designs for the Book 8 logo at the end of last year when the lettering community was rocked by a tragic event—Adé Hogue died as the result of a cycling accident.

As we struggled to come to terms with this, his friend and collaborator Colin Tierney reached out to us and suggested we repurpose some new work he and Adé had been working on. Terence very graciously agreed to step aside for the year and a new logo was born.

Colin and Adé had been collaborating on a project called Stereotype and Adé had already designed several Stereotype logos.

Colin took the "typ" element from what Adé was working on and imagined how the "ism" might look to match.

Adé's "Black History is American History" lettering was the inspiration for the Stereotype logo and Colin has done an amazing job of capturing the personality Adé put into both pieces in the new Typism logo.

About the Artists

We first met Adé and Colin at the same event, the Creative South conference in 2017.  You can see below the photo Adé took of Colin strong-arming Typism founder Dominique Falla into giving him the Book 5 cover.

This was also the same event where we learned Adé thought Typism was pronounced Tipsim. He stupidly confessed this to fellow speaker Scotty Russell and was roasted for it for years afterwards. It became such a running joke with Adé that he created this piece for us to celebrate 500K uses of the #typism hashtag.

We hope you agree that Colin has created a fitting tribute and we only wish Adé could bask in the glory of seeing it on the cover. We know he'd get a real kick out of it and secretly wishes we'd spell it Tipsim instead.

We miss you Adé. With love.
